I usually start with setting my goals for English/ Literacy.  This subject has the most detailed standards (in CA, at least), and I like to wade through it and then sail through the rest.  First up, Ryan’s goals. He’ll be starting second grade in August.  So these goals are drawn from the second grade CA standards.  I set goals based on those standards we have yet to reach, the ones I highlighted in Step 1.  So, my goal sheets are not a comprehensive reflection of the standards.  I use these goal sheets for reference throughout the year, and I don’t want to waste time reviewing what Ryan already knows; I just want to see the goals we need to hit.

The Goals sheet is a simple two-column table.  One column lists our specific goals for each section detailed in the standards.  The other column lists the books, videos, classes, field trips, etc. that I will use to reach each goal.  (More about my resource abbreviations in a later post.)
